A friend of mine wanted a wordpress blog and signed up with 1&1. When he asked how to add a different theme and customize it he was told it was not possible with 1&1. He decided to go to another hosting company.
Perhaps there is a way but it was not easy or intuitive and the support person informed him it was not possible to customize as the folders with the wordpress installation were not available to him, only the standard install from 1&1.
The hosting company did return his money as per their satisfaction guarantee.
