I also love to just think about problems, and find some kind of creative answer to those problems. I write articles on different subjects, and quite honestly, I sit down and open up my Wordpad software, and just start letting the words flow. I can always go back and make changes, but just the process of letting my creative vision flow helps tons.
I'd say research is important to. You definitely have to know the subject to be able to write effectively about it.
I don't remember who said it, but I've always thought in the way that "an idea not wrote down, is often an idea lost." I find that to be very true.
