If you're going to learn HTML you'd do well to learn CSS at the same time. Perhaps modern books are better, but every older one I remember reading largely ignored the semantics of HTML elements, which is important for SEO, not to mention efficient, effective code. HTML for content, CSS for style.

Regarding memory, I found Your Memory by Kenneth Higbee to be very good. Though I have a copy of Lorayne's so I should read that and compare!
