If you want to read the crowning book for intellectuals of the 20th Century, read Godel, Escher, Bach.
I also think that it's a good book, but it's also a difficult book (as my math teacher used to say, a lot of people brought it to put it on their bookshelf in his youth to show that they're intellectual strength but never read the 800 pages). I don't know whether a history major will really understand it.
It quite a difference from your Math for Dummies book.
But I guess trying to read it will only increase your intellectual horizont.
