I think you already answerd your own question. You sleep in cycles. Light sleep is followed by deep sleep. You may awake for some moments after each cycle and fall asleep immediately afterwards multiple times a night. If you get up in the middle of a cycle (because your alarm went off) you feel drowsy half the day no matter how much total sleep you got. So it might be better to get up when you naturally awake - in this case before 5 am or sleep for another 90 minutes (the average span of a sleep cycle).
