If you really read the blog and the link to the one about tolerance vs. love you will see Steve is not just reacting to what some former members did. This decision was a long time coming. If you fell out of love with your gf/bf, would you force yourself to continue the relationship just because they wanted you to?
There is a tipping point where providing value for others is trumped by "do I really want to do this anymore? And is this the best use of my time?" Obviously the answer became no.
I really appreciated the forums and would like to thank Steve for providing them, but I fully embrace his decision now. It sets a very powerful example.

On the other board Steve said: "The reality is that even though this place gets
tons of lurkers, in an average day we only have about 400 members visiting. And many of those 400 don't post very often."
I don't know what "tons" breaks down to in numbers but it sounds like more than enough to pay for itself. Could be a great opportunity for someone. The problem is, how would you capture all those "lurkers" from here?
