You are right in suggesting the importance of obtaining a representative sample of people. If I had a small sample size and collected a majority of participants from one place (e.g., this website) I would be concerned. However, with the number that we will collect (3000) I think that bias from any one particular place is not really a great concern. In addition, I am lucky in that the analyses we will run have built in mechanisms for dealing with something such as this.
