The guy who taught the dream analysis workshop I went to said that dreams have layers of meaning—like an onion. Outer/Obvious --> Emotions --> Puns.

The outer/obvious layer is generally straightforward. If I spend a lot of time doing one thing, I tend to dream about it, or if I need to wake up and go to the bathroom, I'll dream I'm in public and can't find a restroom, for instance.

For the emotional layer, pay attention to how you feel about each object, person, and symbol, and go from there. Was that policeman a symbol of protection, or did you want to avoid getting caught speeding? A ring could represent commitment or it could mean you're annoyed by telephone interruptions.

On the layer of puns, there are many possibilities. What can an apple represent? Health, teacher, forbidden fruit, iPod or Mac, bad apple, upsetting the apple cart, rotten to the core, illumination/insight (think Isaac Newton), and so on. For one woman, an apple meant hidden or unseen danger because as a kid, she'd walk through the family orchard, and apples would fall on or near her.
