I don't know about "malevolent" but some spirits can be negative and create a lot of interference. And Earthbound Spirits/ghosts, positive or negative, are stuck in the Earth plane and need assistance in crossing over. Either way, entities that inhabit our living space creep us out because it's not a healthy situation. All attaching entities need to draw on someone's energy in order to exist. If they share your space, it's often you! So don't just live with our discorporate counterparts and share your home with them.
