Cough drops provide temporary relief for my sore throats, so does numbing spray. Warm foods work well for quick relief as well - chicken noodle soup, tea, and the like.
If you're having mucus drain down your throat and that's irritating it, eat bread or crackers. It absorbs the mucus in you stomach, preventing you from feeling queasy and nauseous. (I guess that doesn't help much for the sore throat, but it's just a helpful hint!)
