Well, as I've said in other places, a negative rep is like a rebuke. In other words energetically it's something like a slap (if less strong than a real slap). You do one, people want to retaliate. It's the nature of the beast. That's why I don't like it.
Mods do their part to make sure people treat each other civilly, and no one is allowed to do verbal attacks, so I don't see why we need to give people the ability to do this sort of attack just to preserve the purity of communication or whatever it is supposed to be for. If we wanted to let people communicate anything we could let them swear at each other, for that matter, but it's already been decided that that's not a constructive thing here.
