From what I have read, amino acids help to metabolise protein and help turn fats in the muscles into fatty acids for the muscle to use for energy.
Taking these supplements in conjunction with a well planned workout routine will help to tone your body and the amino acids will help you workout that little longer/harder and recover a little quicker.
As far as weight loss goes, these supplements, with the workout, will help build muscle. Muscle burns fat. So in an indirect way they will help but you may be better off spending the money on consulting a personal trainer at least once rather than paying for these supplements.
As far as the protein and kidney question, I have read some experts say high protein diets can damage your kidneys and other experts say that the doses recommended by supplement companies are not harmful. If you are worried about the protein, drop the supplement and switch out some of the foods in your diet to foods that are high in protein such as eggs, tuna, chicken, turkey, beef...
