A friend of mine, young, very active (dancer and training XMA at the time he was injured) was diagnosed with a bulging disc about 3 years ago. He was in a lot of pain initially, but he made it a point to walk a mile every day, no matter what (I'm sure you could substitute another gentle exercise like swimming, the point is to keep moving in some way). He was under a doctor's care and had one cortisone injection (my understanding is that this steroid reduces inflammation at the site), and after that purchased an inversion table and spent time on it several times a day. It took him 2-1/2 years to get back to where he felt completely normal and able to go back to his workout regime. But he is now back to full activity.

I pretty much have gotten a day by day report of this, as he is my housemate and I have been his walking partner.

Point being ... be patient and don't give up.
