Asking someone you don't really know what kind of money they make is universally known to be rude and invasive...ask any business man or woman for that matter.
This is actually pretty cultural-in some cultures it's totally normal to ask someone how they make, it's almost like asking them "What do you do?" Incidentally, those cultures tend to have much less income inequality than cultures where it's taboo to talk about how much you make...I wonder why?

Not saying that Steve should answer if he doesn't want to, but it's helpful to keep a broader perspective.
