It's all an illusion. All the likes, dislikes, preferences, personality traits, everything. There is no discrete "self", the whole of reality is a kind of dream. Isn't that a given?
But, the fact is, a lot of people aren't there. Will NEVER be there. Most people will never be able to achieve anything like lucidity in this ongoing dream that is the story that forms what they think of as their life, and that is - believe it or not - actually okay!
In the meantime, it can be a fun game to explore the subconscious, illusion though it be. Getting to know this character we play can have its own rewards, even when/if we realise it's nothing but a character.
My position is that for whatever reason, Awareness is here, pretending to be me, in this make believe setting that is "reality", so I may as well explore it.
