[...] May 8, 2007 Tag:accountability, personal effectiveness, results, self helpAs a follow-up to my post on my favorite “self-help” or personal development books, I present these tips to help you maximize the benefits of reading a personal development book. As a recovering borderline “self-help junkie” I know all too well the pitfalls of consuming one program or book after the next and never putting the information and strategies into play in real life in a powerful way. I’ve found that when I follow the tips below, I grow by leaps and bounds and the results I create are delightful and impressive. So, before you purchase another self-help book, please consider the following tips and give them a try. They might help you take your self to the next level. [...]

[...] It seems to a lot of my friends that I spend a disproportionate amount of my time reading about and practicing the various life hacks I come across, especially when they see that my desk is still covered in clutter and I still fall behind with my work. I think that some of them would be quick to label me as one of Steve Pavlina’s Self Help Junkies. I’m not so sure. [...]

[...] Steve Pavlina has an interesting post on Self-Help Junkies. Basically, they’re people who spend all of their resources learning how to get better, and not actually doing anything to improve their life. Much like drug addicts, self-help junkies feed their addiction by digesting more and more feel-good material. They get sucked into the emotional high that comes from reading enthusiastic drivel, but those unresolved feelings of emptiness and self-doubt always return in the end. For a brief time these devotees may maintain the illusion of action, such as by doing introspective exercises, taking quizzes, making journal entries, and reciting daily affirmations. But when they’re just about to begin the real action phase — the kind that produces measurable results — somehow they always get sidetracked, and the end result is nothing but a rah-rah fizzle.
