[...] Sometime before Christmas I dug up a Steve Pavlina article on overcoming news addiction which prompted me to go without my daily dose of depression. My Business Studies teacher back in high school stressed that we should read the newspaper every day and stay on top of current affairs, but Pavlina lists 13 reasons to the contrary including my favorites: News is irrelevant. How many news stories are relevant to you personally? Virtually none. [...]

[...] I was having a chat with my friend tonight when he mentioned that he is on a “news diet”. A “news diet” is when you go without the news for an extended period of time. He got the idea from a blog that he usually reads and I think the author made a lot of great points. If you like, you can check it out here. [...]

[...] There are other activities that I try to do regularly, but the point is that I have my fingers in a lot of pies. It’s impossible to do everything that I want to do in a day, or even in a week. I’m not the only one in that boat, of course. Some people are good at managing their time. Some people make a lot of money telling people how to do it. Time management is one of Steve Pavlina’s regular topics on his self-help blog, where he gives tips on such specifics as overcoming news addiction, tripling your reading speed, and setting achievable goals. Everyone could benefit from being more able to manage their time. [...]

[...] So you can see how powerful it is, to be able to choose how you percieve your reality. To some extent, everyone has perceptions of reality that they take as fact. For example, you may watch the news every night, with its endless parade of deaths and sadness, and you may feel you have to, because it’s important to know what’s going on in the world. Yet these tragedies and violent events are only a tiny, tiny part of what’s going on in the world. What about the billions of people around the world who had a perfectly fine day today? Thinking you “have” to pay attention to something negative is just as silly as believing you “have” to pay attention to your left big toe! Imagined if you focused on your big toe for an hour every night! And you felt like you needed to do it because otherwise, you won’t know what’s really going on with your body. Of course, you don’t need to pay active attention to your toe - if something is wrong with it, it will let you know on its own! The same is true of the news, or anything else. (For more reasons not to watch the news, check out these two articles by Erin and Steve Pavlina) [...]
