[...] I’ve also studied a lot about automating my income, lifestyle design, and geo-arbitrage. Tim Ferriss talks at length about these exciting concepts in his book The 4-Hour Workweek. And I recently came across an older yet fantastic podcast from Steve Pavlina in which he discusses moving away from trading your time for money. Eventually, I would like to shift my paradigm from thinking of myself as merely self-employed to being a business owner. As Pavlina discusses, the idea is to detach your time from your income, put your income on autopilot, through generating information products for instance, that can earn you residual income, even while you sleep. Or I could develop my web sites further, and try to monetize them. He says how his multiple streams of passive income allow him to spend the bulk of his time doing what he is passionate about, regardless of whether or not it is profitable. Eventually, I would love to develop this business structure, so that my work is less of a means to pay the bills, and more a way to express my passions and continue to learn and grow.
[...] Within the last decade, the easiest way to start a business has been via the internet. The nice thing about this is that you have the potential to set up a “passive” system. You will then really be able to maximize your personal freedom. What I mean by “passive” is a automated system that works by itself; for example people buy products or services from your website, and the product is shipped to them from the distributor, all without you lifting a finger. For more info on “passive” income, check out Steve Pavlina, who is a big advocate of the idea. [...]

[...] Recently, after listening to Steve Pavlina’s How to Make Money Without a Job, I was trying to explain passive income to my mother and bumbling around like an uneducated fool, sounding like I was just trying to avoid doing “real work.” I kept telling her, “No, Mother, trading time for money is bad! You should make money when you’re sitting around watching TV or eating dinner not ONLY when you’re at work!” This just succeeded in making me sound lethargic. [...]

[...] None of this is about not getting a job. (Though you could do worse than not getting a job. My favorite blogger out there is Steve Pavlina. I highly recommend his podcast on this very topic for an alternative mindset about jobs.) This is all about living a full life. Most people decide not to do this. According to the theatre director’s philosophy, your life goes like this: You get out of high school, spend all your money on an education which will leave you stressed, clueless and broke, and then you get to head out into a world of pressure and misery in order to pay off that money. Then, add a little more pressure and have kids! No wonder half of the people in our country are taking anti-depressants when there are people like this running around at our institutions of higher learning and perpetuating a world view of what I call “lame-osity.” —- [...]

[...] But that’s so… limiting! Here, I have to refer to a podcast by Steve Pavlina, where, among other things, he says that any time you’re working for someone else, in a “normal” job, is wasted time, because you’re not growing, evolving, working for yourself, doing anything to improve your life. You’re just surviving, nothing more. You’ve convinced yourself that having a regular job is the only way to live, that anyone without a job is unlucky, and you can’t conceive that you could be doing so much more… and for yourself, for a change.
