Excellent stuff. Especially the part about "ego always wants to...". what would it be like if we can get rid of ego or "make myself zero" as Gandhi said. If folks are interested in this, check out an neutral ( non religious) meditation site www.easwaran.org
I find his books like "conquest of mind", etc resonate with Steve's thinking.

I totally agree with you. If you want to do something that is very important to you and your futur. just forget about the past and what you are and just focuse on the thing that you are doing...which is very good concept and thank steve for this article

Excellent post. This really hit home. I practically preach to others, "You are what you DO." But just last night I was feeling a tad depressed...the reason: too much focus on what I DID, and not enough in the ever-unfolding NOW where I am able to *DO* differently.

What you are talking about here Steve, from my perspective, is role-playing at it's best. Just replace the "ego" with "character" in your article and you'll see. I use to say that your personality/ego is the character you have been playing all your life, and that most people have not tried being other characters nor modifying their existing character.

Of course, the ego/personality changes over time but the difference between personal development and just being the person the world makes you be is consciousness. Being aware of that tinkeing of the mind.

Fear of success is a strange thing. Here is one more example for you:

One guy is working hard to build his business, but somehow manages to not succeed. He doesn't see it this way, but everybody notice that he is in fact sabotaging his own attempts.

Why?

He wants to succeed because he wants to leave his crappy 1-room appartment and move to a house of his own. But a house of his own means that he will have to work a lot to buy and arrange furniture, etc... and he doesn't want this.. and so he is afraid of succeeding in his own business!

Another example: The guy may fear that success may mean that he moves to a bigger house and marries his girlfriend. He secretly doesn't want to marry his girlfriend.. and so he sabotages his business unconsciously.

These are real-life examples.

This is awesome, Steve. The topic you chose is a extemely heavy one and, based on my limited knowledge to teachings of my religion, I see a lot of overlap. There is just a few lines said here but you have covered a lot of aspects to the inner meanings of our day-to-day life.

I agree with the principle behind this entry, however I should note that the use of the word "ego" in psychoanalysis ironically originally roughly meant the conscious "I" you are talking about, the one which shouldn't get caught up in indentifying with any mundane concrete instance, and not the tendency to get stuck in those. How words shift over time...

I can’t belive it.
I'm a constant reader of your great messages.
Today I was thinking a lot of what you are mentioning here (before I red this issue); my past my, present, my future and how my past has gone in my way somehow to prosper my future.
Tomorrow - a big day for me - I'm going to compete in a software contest promoted by Intel - Mexico which will strongly define my near future.
I'm already in the last round - 10 contenders - out of +- 300; and winning the first prize would change my company’s future positively.
Again; what I just red here was like you where talking to me at the right moment.
Steve; thanks so much for your positive thinking and sharing it with me – us.
Rudolf F. Vanek
BTW: Wish me luck for tomorrow’s competition. I really need it.
