The rudder does the steering.

Today has been a very "hectic" day.

A day or so ago I read a post about the way you start your day and the relation it has to the mood for the rest of the day. Its quite amusing that the very next day I see this in action.

Every other tuesd...

As for me, I find that starting my day with some study reading is counter-productive. I tend to deliberate too much and analyze too much with this start. On the other hand, if I'd just jump right in and start working like crazy, I end up with a very productive day.

I find that starting off the day with some study reading helps me get off the ground faster and longer.

But what about those days when you break for lunch and realize that you haven't gotten much done? How do you jump start what is left of the day? What do you do to try an salvage what time you can?

There is still half a day to do something with.

Sometimes a goals exercise helps.
Other times it is a ,"if I can get just this _one_ thing done, today will not have been a total waste.!"
Occasionally a walk helps to clear things up and the rest of the day goes smoothly.

Nothing works every time, are there any you can share that might help?

This is one of the most effective ideas I have ever tried so far. I too got up early this morning and have done most of my stuff now (12 am). And it feels great. However, doing this every day is the hard part...

Also, I think this is not for everyone, since some people do get their peak energy level in the evening (if I remember correct there's a distinction made between "crescendo" and "de-crescendo" type of people).

I just tried manipulating my rudder hour this morning, and it certainly makes a huge difference. I feel awake and energetic - and done a reasonable amount of work - whereas normally I wouldn't even be out of bed yet.

My most productive days usually start with a walk in a nearby park. I wake up and then walk in the park for 30-45 minutes. Then I go back home (I work at home) and eat breakfast.

I find that after the work in the park I feel more energetic and willing to work.

Also, another way to start a good day for me is to play a game of chess in the morning. I play with my Palm. I usually lose my morning game because I'm too drowsy and sleepy, but that's not the point. The point is that playing chess puts me into a mind state of focused logical thinking, which I then apply to the problems at hand.

So true. Everybody has been running in the morning, knows the feeling of having accomplished something and feels invigorated with fresh air, ready to rock. Now substitute the run with work and by the time other people eat breakfast you've gotten things done. In general, I like working outside the 9-5 window, because you get interrupted much less.
