There are also other things you have to consider:

Manage your state.

If you work hard but you get more bored and depressed for every hour you work, this is bad. Soon you won't be able to work anymore.

"Manage your state" is easier said than done. One of the ways you can achieve that is to have fun regularly. Another way is to go have a short trip or vacation.

You must also plan to have fun and to enjoy yourself. Many people think that they don’t need to plan to have fun, and the result is that they don’t have any fun. In fact, people who have lots of fun plan it, but are not aware of this because for them it comes naturally.

Pace yourself.

If on day 1 you work for 14 hours, then on day 2 you may not be able to do quality work because you are tired, and may only work 4 hours. It's much better to work an equal amount of hours each day. The total work output will be higher if you pace yourself, than if you rush and stay overtime.

Many people in the US claim that they work 10, 12 or even 14 hours per day. I could never do that. 8 hours per day is almost more than I can stand.

I wish I could work 10 hours a day, every day, without getting tired, but I simply can’t.

Delegate and automate

Automate as much as you can. Write computer programs which do some work for you.

Learn to delegate. That is, learn to have others work for you. This is a very important skill in business. If you don’t learn to delegate, your business will always stay small.

For learning to delegate I recommend listening to the following audiotape:

How to Delegate Work and Ensure It's Done Right, by Dick Lohr

Break down the work into small TO DO items

Break down the work into small TO DO items. Assign a few TO DO items per day.

This way you won’t be overwhelmed, and you’ll be able to check a few items every day.

This meshes well with the failure post -- you shouldn't make an imaginary plan every day, but nor should you restrict yourself to only making plans you're certain to stick to. Ya gotta push yourself.

Mind mapping is one of many problem-solving tools I use often. It's no panacea, but it's great for envisioning new possibilities and uncovering hidden relationships. If you want to learn more about it, I'd recommend any books or audio programs from Tony Buzan.

Hi Steve.

No relation with your post but have you ever try Mind Mapping? It's a tool to clear your ideas. I'm going to read some books about it because it seems to be interesting.
