A lot of people seem to break what happens in life into one of two categories: success or failure. In reality there exists neither, only the perception of one or the other. Steve has hit the nail on the head here -- the point of life is to live your dreams. This is the biggest success you can create for yourself, because you'll always be successful internally regardless of what happens to you externally. If you feel that you have something to lose by changing your lifestyle to follow your dreams, then you're allowing external factors to control your life. This is very important to understand.

To back up Steve, I always think of it this way. Once you have a goal, every action you take is necessarily in pursuit of your goal. Even if actions or circumstances seemingly take you further from your goal, the very fact that you have identified your goal and you're working on it is progress. In effect, the perspective here is that goal-oriented action is progress, because even if the results are disappointing, you did not sit around on your duff doing nothing. And compared to that, *any* action is definitely progress!

Thanks for a really thought provoking post. I think I saw a lot of me in what you said - its never quite the right time for that big project. I may post some further thoughts on this on my blog when I had some time to think and react.

Going after your dreams doesn't mean striving to reach some distant point you may never reach and then being depressed when you don't get there. It means living your dreams in the present -- right now -- in whatever capacity you currently have to do so. How can you fall down in depression when every day is a success? Living your dreams is about being and doing, not having. External forces can sometimes stop you from having, but not from being and doing and living.

"I still agree with the overall content of the article, but I personally think the individuals mentioned in the example decided they had nothing to lose (because they didn’t) and therefore became successful."

Yes i'm agree with that.

Going after his dreams ok but if you never reach them, nobody will speak about your failure.

If you success, you will be one example for others.

So, don't forget that failure exists. Risks have to be calculated and we can't only focalize our attention on success story without thinking about all failure story.

Totally agree. And i think that a lot of people go after their dreams all their life but never reach them. They fall down in depression and nobody speak about them.

Success Story exists but the opposite is right too.

I love this article...I disagree with one major point though.

Many of the examples you provided are people who had no where to go but up. I think they didn't rely on external security because there wasn't any to be found, or they were so far down that it took a lot less external security for them than it would for someone who has a lifestyle to protect.

I still agree with the overall content of the article, but I personally think the individuals mentioned in the example decided they had nothing to lose (because they didn't) and therefore became successful.
